Lemon Water

Good morning! How are you feeling today? If you’re anything like me, you’re promising yourself you are going to have a really healthy day (hopefully week) after your weekend of too much fun.

I bet at some point or another you’ve talked to someone who swears by lemon water first thing in the morning. Maybe they inspired you to do the same. Maybe you tried it for a couple of days. Or maybe you just rolled your eyes and believed it to be another one of your friend’s fads.

What is lemon water and what is the point?

Basically it’s lemon juice squeezed into water, preferably warm, and drunk first thing in the morning. You may or may not drop a lemon wedge inside. The theory is that drinking lemon water on an empty stomach is beneficial for a number of reasons including detoxifying the liver, alkalizing the system, and preparing the body for digestion.

There is certainly not enough evidence to suggest that the above statements are true. But that doesn’t mean that lemon water isn’t beneficial. Here are a few health benefits of lemon water:

If you squeeze half a lemon into your water, you'll get 25% of your vitamin C needs for the day. Pretty good way to start your day.

Drinking water first thing in the morning, before anything else, is a good idea as it re-hydrates your body. But don’t stop there. Continue to drink water throughout the day.

Some suggest that having lemon water 20 to 30 minutes before breakfast helps stimulate gastric juices which aids digestion.

Lemons contain antioxidants and are very low in sugar.

Drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning may help you feel good, physically or mentally, and set a positive tone to your day.

You may have a different reason for drinking lemon water. As for me, I find that drinking lemon water first thing keeps me from racing to the espresso machine when I get up. It’s a reminder that I don’t need to have coffee within five minutes of waking up. Coffee can wait.

And in reference to point #5, I feel better about giving my body lemon water first thing than I do coffee. And hey, maybe my liver will be happier.

So my detox Monday tip for the week is have a glass of warm lemon water first thing for a week or two and see how you feel. And certainly continue to do so if you find it beneficial.
